Current Research

As more research focusing on the rhizosphere is conducted, the importance of root secretions for plant health, defense, and communication is becoming evident. My research projects, although seemingly unconnected, are tied by the attempt to attain more information regarding the nature of root secretions and their roles in the rhizosphere. My primary research involves a chemical genomics screen which aims to decipher the gene(s), as well as genetic and cellular mechanisms involved in root secretion of phenol and flavonoid compounds in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Another area of my research includes determining how/if root exudates are involved in root self and nonself recognition in plants of the same species. Additionally, my research recently includes localization of flavonoid compounds in the legume Medicago truncatula.
